New MMRRC Strains.

Dear Researchers,

The Mutant Mouse Regional Resource Centers (MMRRC) distributes and cryopreserves scientifically valuable, genetically engineered mouse strains and mouse ES cell lines with potential value for the genetics and biomedical research community.  The MMRRC is a single repository with a national network of four breeding and distribution facilities coordinated by an information and service center.  The MMRRC is supported by the National Institutes of Health

Get ‘em while they last: The following Live colonies will be taken off the shelf this month.  Once off the shelf, this strain will only be available as cryopreserved germplasm or mice from cryo recovery.  Place your orders online by Tuesday, January 31 to receive mice from the Live colony.

$34 million grant awarded to create mouse models of human diseases

A consortium of U.S. and Canadian health science partners, including the University of California, Davis, has been awarded $34 million in grants by the National Institutes of Health to support creation of mouse models of such human diseases as cancer, obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

The new five-year cooperative agreement funds the second phase of the Knockout Mouse Project — or KOMP — first funded by the NIH in 2006. Knockout mice are genetically customized mice that have individual genes turned off or “knocked out,” or have a gene ramped up, to make them either more prone or more resistant to specific diseases.

“In this consortium, we have assembled world experts in mouse stem cell biology, genetics, breeding, and phenotypic analysis who are dedicated to ensuring the successful outcome of KOMP2, on time and on budget,” said Kent Lloyd, director of the UC Davis Mouse Biology Program and principal investigator and director of the newly funded project. Lloyd is also a professor of anatomy, physiology and cell biology at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, and serves as the school’s associate dean for research.

Education App from NHGRI

NHGRI has developed its first education ‘App’!

If you use an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, you can now have free access to the popular NHGRI Talking Glossary of Genetics anywhere you go.

In addition to offering easy-to-understand written definitions, users can listen to an NHGRI scientist explain each term and provide contextual learning tips. The glossary App contains nearly 200 color illustrations and more than thirty 3-D animations that illustrate genetic concepts. The mobile version of the glossary includes all of the bells and whistles of the online version, including new and simplified search methods, easy-to-find terms of interest, alphabetical navigation to search functions, and lists of related terms.

There’s even a “Test Your Gene Knowledge” quiz, so users can check their understanding of the glossary’s contents.

The majority of the glossary terms are studied in middle school, high school, and collegiate science classes. Teachers at all levels were used to help compile the terms and evaluate the glossary during development.

Mouse Molecular Genetics ( 20-23 September 2011 )

For the past 24 years, the Mouse Molecular Genetics meeting has been a leading forum for researchers who apply the methods of genetics and genomics to fundamental problems in mammalian biology, including from stem cell biology, early development, and models of human disease. In particular, the meeting showcases the latest technical developments in genetics and engineering of the mouse genome, and this year will feature a session devoted to imaging. The Mouse Molecular Genetics meeting assembles leaders in the field to present unpublished research findings, encourages junior investigators to participate in oral and poster presentations, and provides a stimulating environment for the exchange of ideas and information.
